After spending the first 45 days of his life in the NICU Riley is finally home where he belongs. Riley was discharged from the hospital last Wednesday and Ben and I have been getting used to having him home. Because his breathing is not yet 100% he came home to us with an apnea monitor that helps track his breathing and heart rate. If for any reason he has some bradycardia or apnea the monitor will let us know. So if you see some wires in some of his more recent photos that is what they are from! Here are some tidbits we have learned over the past couple of days about Riley:
1. He is a noisy sleeper. He makes a myriad of weird noises, including animal noises (see below), while completely asleep. The first night we brought him home we didn't sleep a wink because every time we heard a noise coming from his bassinet we both looked to make sure he was still breathing. It took a day or two to get used to the noises and not jumping up every few seconds.
2. One of the funny noises he makes resembles a goat. He went for his first checkup with his pediatrician yesterday. For the first part of the exam he was asleep and when his pediatrician was checking his neck he let out one of his goat noises and the pediatrician could not stop laughing. Of course he woke up shortly thereafter and the cute animal noises stopped and the crying began!!
3. At the pediatrician's we found out that he is now 5 pounds 6 ounces and 17 1/2 inches.
4. He is a great sleeper (at least for now). We usually feed him right before bed (around midnight), again at 4 am, and then at 8 am. He's pretty good about the four hour period in between feedings so we have been able to get some sleep every night. Lucky, lucky!!

if only we could have stayed just a few more days, then we would have had the chance to hold riley in our arms! i'm so glad that riley is home with you guys, where he belongs. he looks adorable in all of his pictures, and the description about all of the sounds he makes is hilarious. your next video will have to capture them so that we can all ooh and aah with you!
love to you all,
yolanda
Congratulations on Riley Debean being home the slide show was great and was hoping it was a video of the animal noises..he looks like he's home and loving it!
Oh yeah in all the advise and opinions people give you about parenting (me included) we always forget the part about not sleeping (at least the part about not ever sleeping like you use to before you were a parent)..I mean of course you sleep, but never (and I mean never) like you use to..I don't think I've slept for 30 years, thanks to Leah. Now I don't think most parents go that long (or maybe they do), but as Marley just started first grade I figure I'm in for a non-sleeping life...
but I'll tell you, I wouldn't trade the non-sleep for anything!
Our children are us and are the most amazing experiences we will ever have and watching them sleep is the most satisfying part of being a parent...Happy watching!

Again Riley looks so different then when we last saw him. His cheeks are getting so chubby! Why is it that Daddy's are always caught sleeping with a baby in their arms. You never see pictures of moms asleep with a baby in their arms. Always too worried and watching the baby probably! But this is Ben we're talking about so he must just be exhausted. hahaha Now that you've had time to settle in at home, we'd love to come by and visit!

I think Dads just never think to get the camera. Or maybe they think mom will be MAD if they get a bad pic of them or most likely the mom is nursing and those pics are not good for the internet or at least not this kind of site.

congrats on bringing riley home...finally! i can't believe how big he's gotten.
and i agree w/leah's theory...we get mad and the guys just don't care. :)
we are happy to see that riley has decided to come home to check out his new pad. judging from the slide show, riley must be saying to himself "hey, life is good!"
before long he will be asking for the remote control.
love from,
